How do I install and run Lubuntu as a Virtual Machine?

Kindly follow these instructions to setup your local machine (e.g. laptop).

  1. Download and install the latest VirtualBox for your architecture
  2. Download the Linux image for Lubuntu 22.04.1. Lubuntu is a lightweight and modern distribution of Ubuntu. We are going to run Lubuntu on your Windows or Mac machine (how cool is that?!)
  3. Open VirtualBox and click on *New* (Virtual Machine). Make the following modifications from the menus:
    1. Memory Size should be close to 8GB (if possible)
    2. Number of CPUs should be 2 or 3
    3. Virtual Harddisk size should be 40GB
    4. Video memory should be maxed out (e.g. 128MB)
    5. Clipboard reading/writing should be bidirectional between host and guest
  4. Upon clicking on the *Start* button you will be asked for an iso file of the guest OS (in this case, Lubuntu). Select the downloaded ISO file (step 2)
  5. There is a desktop icon that says “Install Lubuntu 22.04”. Click on that button. The screen is probably a small portion of the full estate of the screen. We will fix this later.
  6. Setup Lubuntu (time, user account, installation location etc.) and restart the guest VM.
  7. Once the guest VM is restarted, go to the menu and click on “Insert Guest Additions CD”. Run this software to get your VM running in full screen (from the command line, using superprivileges, i.e. sudo)
  8. From the terminal (keyboard shortcut CTRL-ALT-T), make sure all Lubuntu VM software is updated, i.e. sudo apt-get upgrade.
  9. It is usually a good idea to set up shared folders between the host and guest OS. This can be done via “Shared Folders” in the menu. Make sure to select the “Auto-mount” option, so they are always automagically available. If your host OS is a Linux, you will need to add the group vboxsf to the user running the VirtualBox process, i.e. sudo usermod -G vboxsf -a $USER

I have uploaded a video of the process here (bil-Malti).
